The quiet diplomat

Lance Collins is one of Australia's bravest former intelligence officers though he has suffered greatly for his brutal honesty. He's now written a book about his experiences, Plunging Point, and the first of two extracts is in this week's Bulletin.

He discusses the Jakarta Lobby, the Australian spy turned Indonesian mole and the lack of honesty towards the current day's political masters, including on Iraq and Saddam's missing WMD.

Meanwhile, the Australian's Foreign Editor, Greg Sheridan, breathlessly announces today that the US will now be sharing even more intelligence with Australia. Oh goody, writes Sheridan, even closer ties to the wonderfully efficient US intelligence services. No doubt, the information will be as accurate and forthright as the pre-war intelligence on Iraq.

Sheridan has form. He's in his element. He's a true propagandist in the old school mode.
