The colonial mindset

Israeli activists Peace Now staged a protest against illegal settlements in the West Bank on December 28. Modi’in Illit (Kiryat Sefer) represents yet another stage in the ongoing expansion of the colonial project in historical Palestine and will, in the inevitable peace deal between Israelis and Palestinians, be demolished. The photos above show the area under consideration.

  1. Friends,
Below, nothing new. But it's just so blatant. Compare what
Qadura Faras, prominent supporter of the "Geneva
    Initiative,"
Yossi Beilin's (darling of the EU and great receipient of
it's cash handouts) peace initiative says to Westerners
    about peace,
and what he says to Palestinians. I remember Beilin
rounded up as many Israeli writers as he could
when he went to Geneva. They even left a message on my
    machine. As if!

    PA Leadership Duplicity: PA leader
    Qadura Faras talks peace to
    Israelis and terror to Palestinians
By Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook

Palestinian Media Watch has for years documented the
duplicity of the Palestinian Authority leadership, which
sends a peaceful message to the world media and hate and
terror message to its own people in Arabic.

A new example was documented this week, involving
Palestinian Legislative Council member Qadura Faras. Faras
has been a prominent supporter of the "Geneva Initiative,"
an unofficial peace proposal drafted in 2003 by a group of
leftist Israelis led by Yossi Beilin and Palestinians, and
appears on the Geneva Initiative website, conveying a
    message of peace to Israelis.

However, when Faras recently addressed Palestinians, he used
his speech to honor and praise a terrorist who murdered 10
Israelis. He further spoke in memory of one he called a
"Shahid" [martyr for Allah], a term that places blame for
his death on Israel - even though he had died of cancer in
an Israeli prison. Finally, he pledged to continue in the
path of these terrorists. This is a totally different Qadura
Faras than the one promoting peace on the "Geneva
    Initiative" web site.

The following are the transcripts of these two
irreconcilable messages - the first to Palestinians, and the
    second to Israelis.

    Faras addressing Palestinians:

"[Palestinian] Legislative Council Member Qadura Fares ...
spoke on behalf of the Fatah Movement. He emphasized the
continuation of the struggle until the freeing of all of the
Palestinian territories from the filth of the occupation,
and establishing the independent Palestinian state with
Jerusalem as its capital. Fares blessed the prisoners behind
bars, and in particular mentioned the imprisoned fighter,
"The Sniper" Tha'ir Hamed, who carried out the ... operation
that led to the killing and injuring of several of the
occupation soldiers. [In fact, three Israeli civilians and
seven soldiers were murdered in the terrorist attack - Ed.]

"Fares mentioned the good traits of the shahids [Martyrs for
Allah, which in PA usage includes suicide terrorists], while
clarifying their role in defending the homeland, fending off
the aggression, and resisting the occupation. Faras said,
'We are all going in the way of Ziad Hamed, the Shahid of
Silwad, until the fulfillment of the goal for which he
became a shahid... [Hamed died of cancer while in an Israeli
    prison - Ed.]."
    [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, January 5, 2006]

Faras addressing Israelis [Geneva Initiative website]:

"It is always asked, do you [Israelis] have a partner on the
other side. I am telling you with full sincerity, we are
ready to reach an inclusive agreement with you, which will
promise us freedom and liberty and statehood, and will
promise you the thing we know you are sensitive to, which is
your full right to live in peace and security. The question
is: Are you ready for this?"

  2. My ME101 understanding is that Modi’in Illit is a group of settlements, and Kiryat Sefer is a part of that in the northeast. If that’s the case (and I dont know that it is), were they protesting in Kiryat Sefer or somewhere else in Modi’in? Just curious.

What exactly is historical Palestine for you?

Back on the topic of the settlements, Israel will no doubt pull out of many when the Palestinian leadership finally accepts a peace deal.

Every time you show one of these little protests, it just affirms in my mind that Israel is indeed a democracy. And who says you’re anti-Israel, Antony?

  3. There are big differences to the reaction of the state in apartheid South Africa to that of Israel. Israel clearly tolerates protests. The South African reaction was more often than not a *little* different.

  7. ibrahamov,

I dont think you succeed in making the case you try to make.

"[Fares] emphasized the continuation of the struggle until the freeing of all of the Palestinian territories from the filth of the occupation, and establishing the independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital."

Presumably he means the Occupied Territories, ie Gaza, West Bank and East Jerusalem. This is the two-state solution, that everyone (including Israelis) wants except the fanatic Zionists who still believe in sending soldiers and settlers into Palestinian territory like wagons and cavalry into injun country.

"Fares mentioned the good traits of the shahids [Martyrs for Allah which in PA usage includes suicide terrorists]"

Its a violent occupation, and a somewhat less violent resistance (reflecting the disparity in power), so what do you expect? Peace is made between enemies, not between friends.

The Geneva Initiative represents one of the best efforts ever to define the peace settlement on the 'two-state' model. I would ask you ibrahamov whether you want to support it or not. The main obstacle to peace (as always) is the fact that Israel (or at least the Israeli government) is unwilling to let go of the conquered territories - it prefers to maintain a Zionist dream of expansion and annexation (naturally coming at the expense of the indigenous inhabitants as is always the case with these colonial things).

  8. But you can not take it as 'presumably. It seems that the vast majority are with Hamas with its attempt to turn all of the land into islamic land.

Any change in that policy is for appearances only.

Your use of wordplay also betrays your agenda.

The israeli government is willing to give land to the Palestinians for a state. Just not as much land as Barak offered. Because you don't reward terrorism.

  10. Right, many people and historians consider Begin a terrorist. But how is he more respectable than Arafat?

There's no comparison between Begin and Arafat. Begin limited himself to killing British civil service people, whereas Arafat has killed babies and children. On a scale of 10, Arafat's an 11 and Begin's a three or four. Mandela's a three or four. The Irish Revolutionary Army is maybe a six.

But Arafat and the Palestinians are the worst. There's never been a group in the world as bad as Palestinian or Islamic terrorists, ever. There's never been a group that has a lower moral claim to doing what they're doing. One of the ironies, of course, is that because they've killed so many people, people have elevated their claim. People think they must have a more important claim than the Kurds and the Armenians because the Palestinians use global terrorism and the Kurds and the Armenians don't.

  11. It certainly seems to be a viable solution. Now how to do it while minimizing the collateral damage is the trick.

  12. Arafat's legions wanted to kill as many as possible, so it didn't matter what they were, just how many there were.

Israel wasn't successful, those men were successful because they acheived their goals with the minimum of bloodshed and became statesmen.

The colonial crap is like the rest of the antisemites' canards - an attempt to deligitimaze what can't be. It fools idiots.
