Global voices

Reporters Without Borders has announced the winners of the Freedom Blog Contest. Chosen by popular online vote from around 60 nominated blogs who “each in their own way, defend freedom of expression", the winners are from a variety of countries, including Iran, Malaysia, Italy, Morocco and Afghanistan.

According to both Diana Barahona and Salim Lamrani, Reporters Without Borders are shills for the US State Department.

I have no opinion on the matter, as there are a lot of Trots around who insist that anyone who suggests that there might be faults in the Cuban or Venezualen regimes must be counter-revolutionary running dogs of US imperialism. But if Barahona and Lamrani are right about their funding, there is good reason to be skeptical about RSF.

I also note that the RSF tagline they have adopted seems to be an attempt to cash in on the cred of the Doctors Without Borders brand without bothering to adopt the political low profile that MSF sees as necessary for their work - much less put themselves in harms way to help people who desperately need it as do MSF. That example of tastelessly opportunist marketing alone is enough to earn them my contempt.

Interesting. I've never heard that before. It's possible, though they're doing lots of great stuff on journalists in repressive regimes and I seem to remember them criticising the US for killing so many journos in Iraq. Besides, they're Europe based, seems out to be US proxies, but who knows?
If you find out more, let me know.
And yes, finding fault with certain countries, the 'enlightened places' like Cuba et al, is likely to receive a predictable response.

Please...as if the State Department is some sinister organisation devoting to pushing Chimpy McHitlerBurton's agenda. If anything, State's obstructed every step of the way.

Hey, did you see that up in Hugo Chavez's worker's paradise, a journo has been nearly beheaded?

Maybe the Chavez thugs behind this could take some pointers from your 'freedom's just another word for 72 virgins in heaven' pals who keep swarming over Iraq's borders to prevent the people there from living a life of peace?
