Shameful

Der Spiegel reports on the crisis in Darfur. It's a tragic tale of world indifference, Sudanese viciousness and African Union bungling and buck-passing:

"The world knows exactly what's happening in western Sudan, but hasn't taken any serious steps to intervene and put a stop to the conflict between the Arab Islamist central government in Khartoum, together with its Janjaweed helpers, and the primarily black African population in the poverty-stricken western portion of Africa's largest country (by land mass)."

The Sydney Morning Herald should be congratulated for sending their Middle East correspondent, Ed O'Loughlin, to Sudan in 2004. His reports were placed on the front page and gave Australians a small insight into the horrors of the country. Since then, however, much of our media has paid little more than lip service to the unfolding genocide.

For the Bush administration, Sudan can supposedly supply "key" intelligence in the "war on terror." Good to see their priorities are clear.

I suppose you would rather America spurn intelligence from less than morally pristine sources, eh Tony? That way if/when the next terrorist attack on US soil happens, you can gloat about how stupid the Yankees are.

Glad to see your priorities are so clear.

Nice downplaying of the whole Islamic jihad aspect of this conflict, too, Ant...but I wouldn't expect anything else from a good self-hating dhimmi like yourself who's always happy to scream 'racist' at critics of the Musselmen.

Why AL bothers to run a blog for the sake of attracting the shit comments from the low life above is beyond me.
Don;t you have anything better to do?
Self-hating? A familiar catechism from the brain-washed.
Ultimately, it's all about defending the indefensible Israel isn't it.
All other nearby administrations - good, bad or vile - mere pawns in the great American-Israeli hegemony game.

I continue because some people simply prefer to throw mud and defend every little govt spin they can find. Makes them feel better about themselves and their Western-centric view of the world.
Just wait til they read my book. Suckers...

For those following the sad story, there's a report up at AlertNet that looks at the funding issues facing the UNHCR in its Sudan operation.

Around $30 billion (I spose it's US) is required. The article points out that children are at most risk there at present and that the presence of the UN alone is often enough to deter violence.

Perhaps some of the funds from the supposedly global war against terrorism can be redirected to help ease the suffering of the terrorised refugees in Sudan.

Unfortunately, I'd say it's more likely that we will we allow this situation to continue, either out of apathy, racism, or some ideological disdain for the UN and its humanitarian work.
