A long way to go

While our leaders prepare to "deal" with Islamic extremism - and yet completely ignore any discussion about the foreign policy goals of the Howard government - a more disturbing report closer to home suggests that a great number of Australians hold homophobic views.

Queensland and Tasmania are the most bigoted states while Victoria is the least so. Males between the ages of 14 and 17 hold highly homophobic views and surprisingly, Catholics were least likely of the faithful to harbour fear and hatred of homosexuals. This result should shame us all:

"Overall, 35 per cent of respondents were intolerant of homosexuality. Four in 10 people surveyed in southern Sydney - almost half of men - described gay relationships as immoral. This compared with 27 per cent in the northern suburbs, 34.5 per cent in the west and 37.5 per cent in the south-west."

This is how Sydneysiders deal with gay people.

This is how they deal with gays in the Islamic world.

Spot the difference?

Nice projection work.
No one is suggesting that hanging gay people is OK. It's foul and should be condemned in the strongest sense possible.
But do you think Australian attitudes are also totally unacceptable?

I think the whole survey's a bit dodgy -- I couldn't find it online, but for one thing, of all the cities I've lived in around the world, Sydney is definitely the most gay-friendly/tolerant of all of them.

For another, it's interesting that the news report breaks down various Christians' attitudes, but apparently the feelings of other, ahem, members of our gorgeous mosaic weren't polled. Hmmmm....

The thing is, of course, is that even if some people think being gay is immoral (I don't), the vast vast overwhelming majority of those in the poll are still willing to live and let live. In Muslim lands, of course, any immorality - whether its short skirts or guys getting it on - needs to be stamped out violently, by the state and with the approval of the people and religious leaders. There's the difference, and what I think makes Aussie society and culture superior.

Mr Orientalism strikes again...
Western society is better. We're great. They're not.
We've got a new mini imperialist in our midst...
Those poor natives need to be taught 'our' civilised ways, what what!

By jove I think he's got it! Yes, it's objectively better, if you don't like gays, to keep your opinions to yourself then to hang them.

Right! The sun is well over the yardarm, off to the verandah for pink gin, what!

Shab, didn't your blog work out? Easier to snipe than to write, I spose. Oh well.

A pluralistic society isn't neccessarily one in which everyone agrees on what is or isn't immoral, but how people react to people doing things they don't agree with.

Antony, do you view adultery as immoral? If so, do you consider yourself prejudiced against adulterers?
