The latest on the Douglas Wood saga is succinctly explained by Phil Gomes. Despite initial rhetoric suggesting the kindly Australian was in Iraq helping Iraqis, it appears he was actually assisting the US occupation.
Over to Gomes:
"A simple entrepreneurial businessman he was not. Douglas Wood has been bought, lock stock and smoking barrel, by a militarised American dream. He is a true believer and acts accordingly."
I couldn't have said it better myself. Things are so desperate for the pro-war crowd, they're forced to praise a bloke who clearly cares little for an occupied country or its people. His mantra? "Get some jobs, execute them and make money."
A hero, indeed.

I suspect an increasingly desparate (and shrinking) band of war advocates are beginning to realize how much this adventure is going to cost them ... and unfortuntly the rest of us too.
I bet that in 20 years, Vietnam will seem like small beer compared to the flow-on effects of the Iraq mistake. I read one commentary (unfortunately I cant remember where - can anyone help?) which said that rather than a simple repeat of Vietnam, Iraq was the US version of the USSR experience in Afghanistan. That is a chilling thought, but seems to have some veracity.
Perhaps Michael you refer to a recent CIA report, that said Iraq could help recruit like-minded Islamists more vicious and organised than were created during the Soviet days of Afghanistan.
