There is little more that can be said about the travesty of justice of the US-led military tribunal system, dismissed by the vast majority of the world. Australia, of course, always keen to stay on the good side of despots and US Presidents, thinks everything is fine and John Howard once again this morning on Melbourne radio reminded listeners how dangerous Hicks really is. Whatever happened to a fair trial and the presumption of innocence?
The Sydney Morning Herald's Marian Wilkinson explains the seriousness of the latest revelations and reminds us that when insiders start leaking - in this case, Pentagon officials - be rest assured that something is terribly wrong with the process.
Who said Australia was an independent, sovereign nation?

In an extraordinary interview on 7.30 Report tonight, Foreign Minister Downer not only all but described Hicks as a guilty man (presumption of innocence indeed!) but also managed to have a swipe at the ABC for daring to raise the question of the fairness of the US military commission process!
He then proceeded to declare Australia a "free" country where all opinions are welcomed!
Breathtaking hypocrisy....
Mmm, just read the Downer interview transcript.
Nice try, Alexander. Sure thing, the ABC shouldn't be investigating, he implies, because it may question the government of the day.
The future of the media, imagined by the Howard govt...
A transcript won't give you the Full Downer, in all his prefect glory, with chins aquiver and inane giggle never far away. Kerry toasted him, not that it will matter.
The Pillow Faced Liar knows that only the converted watch the ABC - everyone else is copping the usual celeb shit or perhaps the pursuit of some loan shark on the other channels.
