Osama's Book Club

My latest column for New Matilda discusses the ever-worsening state of free and open debate in the West:

"Osama bin Laden's most recent message contained any number of fascinating insights into the elusive al-Qaeda leader. Not least was his recommendation of a book, "Rogue State", by Washington DC writer William Blum. 'If Bush carries on with his lies and oppression, it would be useful for you to read Rogue State,' bin Laden said.

"Blum, a former employee of the US State Department, has spent much of his life railing against the American Empire and its brutal suppression of democracy around the world. It is a largely hidden history and includes support for Middle Eastern dictators, overthrowing democratically elected governments, favouring the Israelis over Palestinians, and bullying any number of nations into accepting military bases."

My New Matilda archive is here.

In regard to Osama Bin Laden, there's an interesting site:
www.st911.org. which has been set up by a group of academics in the US to counter the 'lies' about what happened.

One of the things they talk about is the fact that after 9/11, on two occasions, Bin Laden denied involvement in the attack. The US Government pressured the media not to carry these statements.

I recall one of those denials too. And the video where he makes reference to his onvolvement in 911 has been exposed as a crude forgery anyway.

Bin Laden did not plant the explosives in the WTC buildings which brought them down in a free fall manner. Nor did he bring down WTC7 on the afternoon of September 11, which fell in the same manner.

Bin Laden was also not responsible for having the military jets stand down which could have prevented the planes from slamming into the WTC buildings and the Pentagon.

Blum is terrific, and deserves a wider readership. Oddly enough, an Afghan fella I worked with a couple of years ago was an avid reader of Blum's books and newsletter.

I wonder how many Pentagon and miltary types will take Osama's advice and read Blum in an effort to see what all of the fuss in the "third world" is all about.

Was listening to a US "Usama Expert" the other day on ABC Radio National, and he was absolutely certain that he was hanging out, with the proverbial side-kick or two, in the proverbial cave in the proverbial mountains on the proverbial border of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

How the hell does one get hold of a New York Times best seller list, and then get hold of one of the books on that list? What does Ussie do? Waltz on down to the local Dymocks at Cave No.5, Cave Rd, Cavesville?
