Buying favour

US-based Center for Public Integrity released a report last week that should cause concern to those who believe that democracy is more than a little sickly in the world's only superpower:

"...lobbyists have spent nearly $13 billion since 1998 to influence members of Congress and federal officials on legislation and regulations."

Roberta Baskin, the Center's executive director, said: "Our report reveals that each year since 1998 the amount spent to influence federal lawmakers is double the amount of money spent to elect them."

In relation to the Middle East, as a renowned correspondent told me recently, "if you're a congressman, and you become a harsh critic of Israel, the chances are you won't get re-elected again", such is the power of the pro-Israel lobby in Washington. Funds will be directed to your opponent and charges of anti-Semitism will follow.

(Thanks to PR Watch for the tip.)

Ex-Kleagle Robert Byrd is regarded by the Washington Report as one of its four favourite senators. Are you willing to offer odds as to whether he will not be re-elected?

The threat is significant, as Rep. Cynthia McKinney (Democrat of Georgia) found out. Her critical remarks about Israeli policy resulted in a flood of money raised by the Zionist right into her opponent's coffers, helping deny her another term.

Such a political hit will be aimed not at anti-Semitism

Cyntia defended his father saying "Jews have bought everybody. Jews, J-e-w-s." The McKinney family spelt out what they believe, and the article still supports her.

Anonymous Anonymous said... much of that money comes from the trial lawyers, Soros-backed groups, that whole gang that pushed McCain-Feingold under false pretenses, etc? It's a two-way street, mate.

But no, for Ant(h)ony, it's always about dem Jews...

Anthony, I'm not Jewish, but have you ever stopped and taken a step back and looked at your writings about Israel? If anyone else wrote about an ethnic or religious group's secret cabals controlling a country's government, and pulling the strings, I reckon you'd accuse them of paranoia at best or bigotry at worst. I don't want to accuse you of being a self-hating Jew, but you really do seem to have some issues with what I assume from your name is your heritage.
