The draft

Will the US need to reinstate the draft? The military establishment realise that to maintain troop levels in Iraq and throughout the world, 100,000 more men and women are required.

This could be the best thing for the movement against American militarism in decades.

As much as this would be a good thing, I'm pretty sure that the military would never reinstate the draft again after the Vietnam experience. far more likely might be a partial withdrawal from Iraq and a retreat into US bases.

It seems so unlikely that the draft would reappear, but never say never. The aims of many neo-cons simply require massive amounts of manpower. From whence will they come?

It could be the best thing... but only if it was absolutely universal, you know, the Bush twins and the scions of Cheney, Wolfie and the rest serving on the front lines, not in some cushy desk job. So that the chest thumping pollies put their own families in the line of fire.

Believe it when I see it.
