Making murder acceptable

Khalid Amayreh, West Bank, Al-Jazeera, October 12:

"The Israeli army has signalled its intention to keep using Palestinian civilians as human shields in operations aimed at assassinating, arresting or kidnapping Palestinian political and resistance activists. The Israeli High Court issued a ruling earlier this week barring the army from using Palestinian civilians as human shields, a practice used heavily in the West Bank, particularly since the outbreak of the Palestinian intifada or uprising in 2000".

Seems the headline should have read "Preventing murder is not a legitimate use of armed forces".

The argument runs that the military "would be forced to bombard and destroy entire buildings" if it couldn't use human shields. You see, they are only using human shields for the Palestinians' own good. Otherwise they would have to use other equally immoral methods.

Ibrahamav, perhaps the headline should read, "IDF refuses to acknowledge that the use of human shields is a war crime and cannot be justified under any circumstances".
