Breaking through

Paradise Now, a compelling film about Palestinian despair in the occupied territories, has won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film. In his acceptance speech, Palestinian filmmaker Hany Abu-Assad called for a Palestinian state and saw the award as "a recognition that the Palestinians deserve their liberty and equality unconditionally."

Palestinian films are a rarity in the US, making this win even more significant. Worldwide recognition of the "other" side has become unstoppable.

Ah, but Antony,

Didn't you notice that nobody in the audience clapped. My guess is they were shocked when he used the word "unconditionally". For that wordin Palestinian speak means driving the Jews into the sea.

Now, I guess you are going to have to get used to the idea that most people do not wish genocide upon the Jews. Perhaps not even Hollywood.

If only their despair were not dwarved by their hatred of Jews, they would have already had a state (cough, did someone mention Jordan at any time?). Their 'despair' is a strategic choice. Pity this kind of tactic is oblivious to gullible self-hating Jews.

Yes. It is sad. It is sad to see that the gulible people of the world, led by fools like AL and his mentor, Finklestein, get so caught up in the melodrama of the palestinians, never getting that their fate has always been in their hands.

But rather than reach for the stars, they'd rather reach for the closest Jewish throat.

But you have a good heart. Hopefully an Islamist won't cut it out for you.

A film that celebrates, promotes or/and normalises suicide bombing should never be recognised as a legitimate expression. Murdering innocent women and children is not a legitimate way to express anger or frustration.

I imagine Violet was quite shocked when he didn't pull out a machine gun and blow everyone away, what with him being an Evil Arab and all. Then again, maybe it wasn't all that surprising ... they are after all, also Evil schemers.

Just as I was starting to get grumpy at Violet the Inveterate Racist,

Ahhh ... a soothing mogadon a la mundane. Does it get any duller than that? No, but it does get more degenerate thanks to...

psydoc who said the following...
"If only their despair were not dwarved by their hatred of Jews,"

...and if only their hatred of their oppressors (what ungrateful scum!) were not dwarved by the manifst evil of the military seizure and occupation itself.

"they would have already had a state"

Ohh look! Kosher flying pigs!

"Their 'despair' is a strategic choice."

Yeah, occupation, poverty and death is what the Palestinians really want. It's all part of their grand plan to slowly but surely murder themselves. Wait! I can't believe it! MORE kosher fly pigs!

And good ol' Mel chimes in with some advice on kull-cha:
"I think I'll go and watch 'Team America' again."

And finally the grand old pimpled teenager of messianic Zionism, Ibrahamav, reveals who in fact is pulling all the strings:
"...It is sad to see that the gulible people of the world, led by fools like AL and his mentor, Finklestein, get so caught up in the melodrama of the palestinians"

That's right, the paranoia of fanatical far right-wing Zionism is now eating with relish the anti-Semitism which birthed it:

The true enemy of Israel, the true master-mind behind the scenes manipulating this unsuspecting world, is a secret cabal of Jews who are consumed by their eternal quest for sex, glory, riches and most coveted of all, bookstore launches. It is said - and here we must be careful (they have eyes everywhere, you know) - their doctrines are written in pig's blood on a secret patchment (made entirely of an ancient Fontina Val D'Aosta cheese rind) and is entitled "The Protocols of the Elders of Anti-Zion". (Dan Brown is writing an expose as we speak - Melanie will be reviewing favourably soon.)

Yes, tolllerance of suicide bombers. Where does peace come into it. The Palestinians are in their situation because of the Muslim world's intolerance for Infidels. They gays are starting to get it. The Islamists are feeling so confident that they have Europe now that their intolerance is spreading to more than just Jews. When you start to try understand someones reasons (there was alot of dishonesty in the film) for blowing up innocent people, morality goes out the window.

Of course there is a "death cult" by your definition. Indeed, by your logic (I use the term laughingly, naturally), every nation has its "death cult". It's called "The Armed Forces", where kids are indoctrinated into the belief that there is nothing more glorious than to die for a worshipped magical idol called "The Flag". The U.S. "death cult" is especially strong. Australia's is less so, but on the other hand, our annual "death cult" parade - Anzac Day - apparently defines Our National Character. Ya don't get more "deathy" or "culty" than that!

An excellent review of Paradise Nowby Matthias Kuntzel where he discusses a few points the Hollywood Foreign Press Association found too difficult to understand.

designated suicide bomber Khaled legitimates his actions with the argument that Israel “[does not want to] accept any two-state solution.” The Palestinians, he maintains, have “exhausted every political means” to achieving this goal. Because they have gotten nowhere, there is no longer an alternative to suicide bombings.

Any, as Thomas Kruger puts it, “critical reception“ of the film should have disputed such a presentation. The Jewish side supported a two-state solution not only in 1937 and 1947, but also in 2000, when, in the course of the negotiations at Camp David over Prime Minister Barak’s Middle East peace plan, this solution was closer to being realized than ever before. However, Yassir Arafat left the negotiating table, and immediately thereafter gave the green light for the second Intifada.

But, of course -- who cares about truth in Hollywood, unless it makes a good movie. The same can be said for Antony's upcoming book.

Now, onto our hastily convened book club session. Thank you for your advice – perhaps I will invest in a thesaurus at some point in the future. I hear someone believes you need a dictionary. Maybe so; I wasn't paying much attention at that stage, I must confess. However, since we're all suddenly in the business of recommending literature, can I suggest this or perhaps this, the latter being more classic in tone and less irreverent. It is a weighty subject, after all – so much so that you had trouble grappling with even its more elementary rigours in your above post. Please enjoy, and best of luck to you.

Let's just agree that the thesaurus line wasn't a bad one and leave it at that.

"However, since we're all suddenly in the business of recommending literature, can I suggest this or perhaps this, the latter being more classic in tone and less irreverent."

Now, see, that fell flat because it was simply copying the thesaurus joke with 'dictionary' as substitute. Keep working at the humour thang though. Practice makes perfect.

Melanie,
You mention the cut and paste I sent to this site a few days ago .
I had read this material on the Alert and Alarmed site and thought it interesting because it shows a failure of political leadership. It seems that Arafat's legcy is a mixed one and he fits the description of a warlord well.
However the point wasn't that the Palestinian people are incapable of being responsible and interested in pursuing peace but that they have been severely let down but their leaders.
I would also suggest , as politely as possible , that Alert and Alarmed has an abridged version of a Uri Davis book ( I'm not sure maybe it is a newspaper or journal article? )called Apartheid Israel.
The information about the establishment of the state of Israel and the subsequent development of it's laws and regulations are very challenging.
I am not a student of history and have read this site to try and learn more about the situation in the Middle east. I'd like to know what readers think after they read this material.
I'll also mention that Alert and Alarmed receives a flood of abusive replies - to such an extent that I think Edward comes to this site for a few chuckles.
If readers already know this information I apologise for taking up their time.

melanie - The Palestinians are in their situation because of the Muslim world's intolerance for Infidels

that has got to be one of the most ignorant statements that i have read on this board, and thats saying something with the likes of ibrahamov, shab, violet and noleftychick posting regularly,

violet - For that word in Palestinian speak means driving the Jews into the sea

oh for an island of knowledge in a swamp of ignorance, In November 1988, the PLO formally relinquished all Palestinian claim to territory inside Israel's 1967 borders and, in the belief that the resolution required Israel's withdrawal from the occupied territories and that the United States supported such a withdrawal, declared its goal to be the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza, existing alongside Israel, with a shared capital in Jerusalem. In a formal public statement, PLO leader Yasir Arafat recognized Israel's "right to exist" at the same time. The Palestinians thus relinquished claim to 78 percent of Palestine, demanding independent statehood only in the remaining 22 percent.

The United States, through six administrations from Johnson to George H. W. Bush, consistently adhered to Resolution 242, explicitly endorsed its central land-for-peace thesis, and therefore explicitly led the PLO to believe that Palestinian adherence to the resolution and an expressed willingness to live in peace with Israel would bring U.S. support for the other half of the deal--land for the Palestinians, in the form of an independent state in the West Bank and Gaza, with a capital in Jerusalem, following a virtually complete Israeli withdrawal

at camp david, According to the myth, Barak's proposal would have given the Palestinians, as New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman is fond of repeating, "95 percent of the West Bank and half of Jerusalem, with all the settlements gone". In fact, what Barak actually offered at Camp David was to withdraw from 89-90 percent of the West Bank, not 95 percent; to give the Palestinians sovereignty in a few non-contiguous neighborhoods of East Jerusalem, not half of Jerusalem; and, far from assuring that all the settlements would be gone, to annex to Israel settlements housing fully 80 percent of the 200,000 Israeli settlers in the West Bank and 100 percent of the 170,000 settlers in East Jerusalem.

The resulting Palestinian "state" would have been broken up in the West Bank into three almost completely non-contiguous sections, each connected only by a narrow thread of land and each surrounded by Israeli territory, plus Gaza. This so-called state would have been a colony, not a state--with no real independence, no ability to defend itself, no control over its borders, no control over its water resources, no easy way even for its citizens to reach one section from another, and a capital made up of separate neighborhoods not contiguous to each other or to the rest of the state. Israel would never have agreed to live in a disjointed, indefensible state like this, but Israel and the United States thought it fine to offer this to the Palestinians. This Israeli offer, made with U.S. support and participation, turned the promise of Resolution 242 on its head

my suggestion is that people who really care about the israeli-palestinian situation should start their engagement by reading about it, not recycling media sound bites about israel making tremendous offers and arafat walking out, because with the aid of my thesaurus i can tell you its bullshit, manure, hogwash, baloney and propoganda

Does it matter - how much? James, do you enjoy wasting time on our little antisemite?

If so, keep at it.

Sometimes it's nice to see these things to the end, ibrahamav. In the recent past, you yourself have demonstrated that you agree.

"Okay, so it's immature - your description. How much ownership of this "little exchange" do you take? 50%? Hrm. Draw your own conclusions."

Yes, about 50%. Although I'm simply doing this to see how long you'll persist. You seem to be doing it for reasons of ...what...pride or something like that?

As you've noted, this is path Ibby travels every day. Best not to follow in that particular master's footsteps.

An Award for Terror

By Yossi Zur

This week the Hollywood Foreign Press Association awarded
the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film to the Palestinian
movie "Paradise Now." The film follows the path taken by two
young Palestinians from their decision to become suicide
bombers, until the moment they board a Tel Aviv bus crowded
with children.

"Paradise Now" is a very professional production, created
with great care for detail. It is also an extremely
dangerous piece of work, not only for Israel and the Middle
East, but the whole world.

My son Asaf was almost 17 years old, an eleventh-grader
studying computer sciences, when one day after school he
boarded a bus in Israel to return home. On the way, a
suicide bomber from Hebron, 21 years old and himself a
computer sciences student in the Hebron Polytechnic, also
boarded the bus and blew himself up. Of the 17 people
killed, nine were schoolchildren aged 18 or younger. Asaf
was killed on the spot.

I went to see "Paradise Now" to try to understand what
message it was trying to convey. Was it that the murderer is
human and is as deserving of sympathy as his victims? He is
not. Was it that he has doubts? He has none. After all, he
is so sure of his mission that he is willing to kill himself
along with his human targets.

Or maybe, I wondered, the film was trying to give the
message that it is the Israelis who are to blame for this
horrific act, for the phenomenon of suicide bombing. In that
case, are the Israelis also to blame for the similar
terrorist attacks on New York City's World Trade Center, the
Bali nightclub, the Amman hotels, the shop in Turkey, the
restaurant in Morocco the underground stations in London,
the trains in Spain and so many others?

What exactly makes "Paradise Now" worthy of such a
prestigious award? Would the entertainment writers who chose
to honor this movie have given the same accolades if the
film had been been about the young men from Saudi Arabia who
moved to the U.S., took flying lessons and then underwent
Islamic ritual preparations for their holy mission to crash
airplanes into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon? Would they
have dared to give such a version of "Paradise Now" a
similar award?

This movie attempts to deliver the message that suicide
bombings are a legitimate tactic for those who feel they've
exhausted all other means of resistance. But a
suicide-murderer who boards a bus and snuffs out the lives
of 15 or 20 innocent people, or who walks into a city
carrying a biological, chemical or nuclear weapon and kills
10,000, or even 100,000 people, is that still a legitimate
tactic? Where does one draw the line?

The world should draw the line at one person. My son was
almost 17; he loved surfing, he loved pop music. He is now
gone because a suicide bomber decided that blowing himself
up on a crowded bus filled with children was somehow a
legitimate act.

Awarding a movie such as "Paradise Now" only implicates the
Hollywood Foreign Press Association in the evil chain of
terror that attempts to justify these horrific acts, whether
the number of victims is 17 or 17,000.

EMS : I stand by my earlier statement - you are in sore need of some perspective. Calling others immature, then conceding "I'm simply doing this to see how long you'll persist." Hrm. How very mature of you.

Anyhoo, I'm done with this. Feel free to have the last word.

Below is contact information for
the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, those responsible
for helping to glamorize terror. If you'd like to contact
them and let them know how much you admire their brilliance
and morality in voting "Paradise Now" a Golden Globe award,
helping all of us to understand the "humanity" of those who
target babies and pregnant women, please do. I want to add
this: During the Nazi era, there were many such people who
"understood" where Hitler was coming from, and helped to
ease the world's apprehensions. The world paid a very steep
price for their ignorance and justification of immorality.
