Breaking through

Paradise Now, a compelling film about Palestinian despair in the occupied territories, has won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film. In his acceptance speech, Palestinian filmmaker Hany Abu-Assad called for a Palestinian state and saw the award as "a recognition that the Palestinians deserve their liberty and equality unconditionally."

Palestinian films are a rarity in the US, making this win even more significant. Worldwide recognition of the "other" side has become unstoppable.

Also, we are talking about Mike Moore-loving, Champagne-sipping, diamond-encrusted pinkoland Hollywood.

If only their despair were not dwarved by their hatred of Jews, they would have already had a state (cough, did someone mention Jordan at any time?). Their 'despair' is a strategic choice. Pity this kind of tactic is oblivious to gullible self-hating Jews.

Yes. It is sad. It is sad to see that the gulible people of the world, led by fools like AL and his mentor, Finklestein, get so caught up in the melodrama of the palestinians, never getting that their fate has always been in their hands.

But rather than reach for the stars, they'd rather reach for the closest Jewish throat.

But you have a good heart. Hopefully an Islamist won't cut it out for you.

Forget trying to understand what drives people to partake in suchs acts.

But we do understand. Humiliation. That's it. Nothing else. Their culture teaches them that it is better to be dead then live humiliated.

And they are humiliated by most anything and anyone.

And the worst? Those Jews. How they can't live with the fact that they keep losing to those Jews.

You write like a tosser, in your photo you pose like a tosser and in your blogger "interests" you sound like a tosser.

I'd say the same of your name, but I suppose you can't help that.

Regardless, perhaps there's some club you can join?

Wasn't part fo the whle purpose to create Israel, a consequence of the humiliation, as wel las suffering and brutality the jews had experienced at the hands of the Nazi's?

No.

Edward –

Your constant whining that "your post makes me bored" is getting - well - boring. Please try to be more imaginative next time.

Now, onto our hastily convened book club session. Thank you for your advice – perhaps I will invest in a thesaurus at some point in the future. I hear someone believes you need a dictionary. Maybe so; I wasn't paying much attention at that stage, I must confess. However, since we're all suddenly in the business of recommending literature, can I suggest this or perhaps this, the latter being more classic in tone and less irreverent. It is a weighty subject, after all – so much so that you had trouble grappling with even its more elementary rigours in your above post. Please enjoy, and best of luck to you.

Why not click on the links so you'll realise what a dick you just made of yourself.

And please don't get back to me with one of those "oh...um... yes, that's what I meant!" posts.

Are you just genuinely doltish or do you think you're employing some witty, evasive rhetorical manoeuvre to stay one step ahead in the flame war? If it's the former, well I genuinely feel sorry for you. If the latter, well...I genuinely feel sorry for you.

Smith - Thanks for a kernal of truth wrapped in layers of addamo. Unfortunately, the kernal proved nothing and you know where you can shove the addamo.

EMS: yawn. Of course you do. If not, why are you doing throwing around words like "immature"?

You should take stock, start from the beginning, and work it through. I hope you find a bit of perspective.

Okay, so it's immature - your description. How much ownership of this "little exchange" do you take? 50%? Hrm. Draw your own conclusions.

An Award for Terror

By Yossi Zur

This week the Hollywood Foreign Press Association awarded
the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film to the Palestinian
movie "Paradise Now." The film follows the path taken by two
young Palestinians from their decision to become suicide
bombers, until the moment they board a Tel Aviv bus crowded
with children.

"Paradise Now" is a very professional production, created
with great care for detail. It is also an extremely
dangerous piece of work, not only for Israel and the Middle
East, but the whole world.

My son Asaf was almost 17 years old, an eleventh-grader
studying computer sciences, when one day after school he
boarded a bus in Israel to return home. On the way, a
suicide bomber from Hebron, 21 years old and himself a
computer sciences student in the Hebron Polytechnic, also
boarded the bus and blew himself up. Of the 17 people
killed, nine were schoolchildren aged 18 or younger. Asaf
was killed on the spot.

I went to see "Paradise Now" to try to understand what
message it was trying to convey. Was it that the murderer is
human and is as deserving of sympathy as his victims? He is
not. Was it that he has doubts? He has none. After all, he
is so sure of his mission that he is willing to kill himself
along with his human targets.

Or maybe, I wondered, the film was trying to give the
message that it is the Israelis who are to blame for this
horrific act, for the phenomenon of suicide bombing. In that
case, are the Israelis also to blame for the similar
terrorist attacks on New York City's World Trade Center, the
Bali nightclub, the Amman hotels, the shop in Turkey, the
restaurant in Morocco the underground stations in London,
the trains in Spain and so many others?

What exactly makes "Paradise Now" worthy of such a
prestigious award? Would the entertainment writers who chose
to honor this movie have given the same accolades if the
film had been been about the young men from Saudi Arabia who
moved to the U.S., took flying lessons and then underwent
Islamic ritual preparations for their holy mission to crash
airplanes into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon? Would they
have dared to give such a version of "Paradise Now" a
similar award?

This movie attempts to deliver the message that suicide
bombings are a legitimate tactic for those who feel they've
exhausted all other means of resistance. But a
suicide-murderer who boards a bus and snuffs out the lives
of 15 or 20 innocent people, or who walks into a city
carrying a biological, chemical or nuclear weapon and kills
10,000, or even 100,000 people, is that still a legitimate
tactic? Where does one draw the line?

The world should draw the line at one person. My son was
almost 17; he loved surfing, he loved pop music. He is now
gone because a suicide bomber decided that blowing himself
up on a crowded bus filled with children was somehow a
legitimate act.

Awarding a movie such as "Paradise Now" only implicates the
Hollywood Foreign Press Association in the evil chain of
terror that attempts to justify these horrific acts, whether
the number of victims is 17 or 17,000.

EMS : I stand by my earlier statement - you are in sore need of some perspective. Calling others immature, then conceding "I'm simply doing this to see how long you'll persist." Hrm. How very mature of you.

Anyhoo, I'm done with this. Feel free to have the last word.

Below is contact information for
the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, those responsible
for helping to glamorize terror. If you'd like to contact
them and let them know how much you admire their brilliance
and morality in voting "Paradise Now" a Golden Globe award,
helping all of us to understand the "humanity" of those who
target babies and pregnant women, please do. I want to add
this: During the Nazi era, there were many such people who
"understood" where Hitler was coming from, and helped to
ease the world's apprehensions. The world paid a very steep
price for their ignorance and justification of immorality.
