Getting behind the headlines

Mustafa Barghouti, secretary-general of the Palestinian National Initiative, Al-Ahram, 1-7 January:

"What is happening on the ground is the creation of a system of apartheid. Of 960 million cubic metres of water that is generated in the West Bank, Palestinians are allowed to use only 109, one-tenth of our water. The rest goes to Israel. On average, a Palestinian citizen in the West Bank is allowed to use no more than 36 cubic metres of water per year, while Israeli settlers in the West Bank can use up to 2,400 cubic metres. We are not allowed to use our own roads and streets. We are not allowed to build houses. We are not allowed to move freely. Our GDP per capita is less than $1,000 while Israel's is almost $20,000, and still we have an imposed tax and market union which obliges us to buy products at the same cost as Israelis."

While Sharon lies on his deathbed, the Sydney Morning Herald offers this page one headline: "Peace hopes hang by a thread." Peace according to whom? We all know the answer.

We now think that there is a reason besides morality for the Zionist scam to get out of the way of decency. While not the same thing as a belief in a Godlike ultimate justice, it is ominous. The upshot is that old-style empires, the mechanics of which Zionism presumes to employ, were over really in WWI and this became obvious on the death of the overt old empires following WWII. The Israelis honestly want to drive everyone else in the world insane with their hatred-inspiring evil, deflecting all criticism with as much dishonesty and mendacity as possible. How long can they do this without more and more people attacking them? Israel has no desire whatsoever for reconciliation, peace, justice or civilization. After decades of disrupting, attacking and defaming peaceful opponents, Israel will find itself left with violent enemies. Are 200 hundred nuclear weapons enough for the non-Israeli world?

When I visited Masada in Israel late last year I remember hearing the tour guide say something that may as well have been a Freudian slip. Masada is a historical site of mythical proportions to Zionists, not dissimilar to the shrine at Karbala which 'commemorates' the massacre of Imam Ali's followers. The basic story is this. During Roman times, a group of zealot Jews walled themselves up in an imposing mountain-top fortress. Eventually the Romans breached the fortress. But not before the zealots inside killed themselves. In modern Israel, young soldiers are taken to Masada to hear the story and proclaim 'Masada shall never fall again.'

The tour guide explained in some detail how the Romans laid siege to the fortress. "The Romans were never in a hurry. They conquered the world in their own time." The implication was obvious. With overwhelming force and inordinant support from the world's greatest military and economic entity, Israel need not rush itself with any plans for overnight conquest of occupied Palestine. Instead, Israel has decided to squeeze the Palestinians off their land, piece by piece.

As a key architect of the settlement program stretching back some decades, the role played by Sharon in the present injustice cannot be underestimated. Yet if war is peace then Sharon is without doubt, to borrow an infamous phrase, "a man of peace."

As the palestinians have refused every offer of peace, either by refusal to perform anything that they have agreed to, or outright refusal of the offer, there is no wonder they continue to lose what they would claim to be theirs.

Little by little, they breed themselves into tighter quarters.

I applaud eddies understanding of the offer made by Hamas. But he is still an antisemite.

You deplore that which you have no knowledge. You're just a run-of-the-mill antisemite.

Some reason your curiousity forms an obligation on anyone? Some reason your observation actually means something, even to you?

For whatever reason I frequent this forum, it serves that reason.

Since you are full of addamo, your statement is obviously untrue.
