Delusions

This Republican Majority Whip doesn't get out much. "It's very difficult to run a perfect prison anywhere, but the United States does that better than any other country in the world", he said. Tell that to these people.

Hmm, wonder what aspect of the US prison system has turned McConnell into such a fan.

Could it be the imprisonment rate? (about four times that of Australia and - along with some of the former Soviet republics - the highest in the world).

Could it be the inadequate medical care and rampant contagious diseases - from skin infections to hepatitis C and HIV?

Could it be the endemic violence, much of it organised by guards for gambling purposes, that give general population prisoners in the US a shorter life expectancy than those on death row?

Could it be the kinky little flourishes, like Sheriff Arpaio's state run B&D dungeon?

Or maybe Senator McConnell is from one of the cow-punching states and there is nothing he likes more than a good old fashioned, ultra-violent rodeo.

Yep, must make his heart swell with pride to sit back in the senate and admire the prison system provided by the land of the free.

Or perhaps simple deflection and denial...
We finally have some Democrats calling for the closure of Guantanamo Bay. Not before time. It will happen, one day...
But the West will pay a very heavy price...

Off topic: After 10 hectic days the Sydney Writers Festival wound down. Our reporter at the festival, Hugo Kelly, celebrates his arrival home in Melbourne by handing out his own awards: As you sow, so shall you reap: As 20-something blogger, Antony Lowenstein, observed out loud: Why are they all so old?

Thanks for that Jozef.
Er, I didn't meet Hugo Kelly. How did he know I thought that? Mmmm, I need to investigate....

He is one of the thousand Chinese whispers spies ;-) You were spot on! When I first invaded the Festival 7 itchy years ago most people were in their 20s and thirties - not 60s or 70s ...
