Freedom of speech?

Macquarie University public law professor Drew Fraser appears on Channel 9's "A Current Affair" and offers a collection of racist propaganda from the Hitler era. Thankfully, host Ray Martin takes him to task. Fraser's University has reportedly issued a statement deploying racism but supporting Fraser's right to express his views. Should there be limits on such freedoms?

Ray: What is a typical Australian in your eyes?

Drew: It is the sun bronzed, blonde, blue eyed Aussie. That is what brought me down here. That is what, I would say, brought many people down here, the belief that what was really attractive about Australia, was that it was populated by Australians.

Read the whole interview.

Ray's approach is commendable (and I say that reluctantly, as Ray does little to inspire me with confidence generally).

More commendable would have been inviting a Colin Tatz or a Drew Cottle to join the discussion and refute Fraser's eugenicist rubbish with scientific fact and some of the lessons that history has taught us about "race".

We can only hope that Ray's viewers agree with his assessment that Fraser is spouting racist crap. Even airing this bloke's "opinion" can be asking for trouble.

I agree. Interesting that ACA even featured such a person. Perhaps as a way to expose his bigotry? Strange, though, as Ray's show often features very stereotypical portrayals of a wide variety of groups in soceity...
Channel 9 can be very weird...

I'm astounded that he said:

Sub Saharan Africans have an average IQ of 70-75, that is a fact.

Yeah, us Chinese are meant to be better at Maths than the average human being. But buggered if I'm going to let my brother balance my modest accounts. :-P

I have to say... I am astounded that his university lets him remain an employee. Universities are usually such conservative organisations.

But yeah, this takes me back to 1996 when I was in those Pauline Hanson protests, really. It's funny... I kinda think that with this new era of hatred, Drew should recognise that his generic racism is kinda... well, unfashionable. Tis much more fashionable to at least couch it in anti-terrorist terms.

The biggest irony in all this is the guy's inability to understand Australia's history. If a German or a Briton aired these kind of views, I could better understand his argument about the ethnic purity being polluted. I wouldn't AGREE, but I'd understand better. But the only Australian who would be justified in making such a point is an Aboriginal, because the rest of us are all just immigrants polluting their ethnic purity, aren't we?

I can, to an extent, understand the university's standing by his right to air his views, but such racism is so misguided and out of place in the 21st century that surely the guy is too stupid to be a university professor!

Macquarie University Public Law Professor sounds like one job that should be given to an Asian-Australian as quickly as possible.

Yeah, and what do we make of the results of ACA's phone poll? 85% of callers were in support of that racist "academic". Now every racist in this country will feel validated. Wonderful! Still reckon Ray Martin isn't a schlock-jock, hmmm?
