News bytes

- An intellectual duel between Noam Chomsky, Germaine Greer and Paul Wolfowitz? Spare me.

- The New York Time journalist Judith Miller has been released from jail. Large issues remain, not least about her credibility and the institution in which she works. Arianna Huffington asks some questions.

- Australian historian Clinton Fernandes examines the history of Noam Chomsky. "The Wild Man in the Wings" is a major understatement.

- US soldiers who tortured Iraqi prisoners needed some stress relief. Really.

- Ambassador Karen Hughes, undersecretary of state for public diplomacy and Public Affairs at the US Department of State, is travelling around the Middle East in an attempt to improve America's image in the region. Saudi bloggers have their say on her mission.

- Retired American Army Lt. Gen. William Odom, a Vietnam veteran, says, "the invasion of Iraq, I believe, will turn out to be the greatest strategic disaster in U.S. history." Note that he doesn't think the war was a mistake on ethical or moral grounds, merely strategic.
