News bytes

- Salman Rushdie speaks in Boston and discusses writing, terrorism, India and "opinionated" women.

- Palestinian children are indoctrinated to hate Israelis and Jews? Nice myth, shame about the reality. A Jordanian blogger explains.

- From AP: "The Bush administration is spending about $7 billion a month to wage the war on terror, and costs could total $570 billion by the end of 2010, assuming troops are gradually brought home, a congressional report estimates." Freedom is damn expensive these days.

- The Melbourne Age interviews Prime Minister John Howard and manages to avoid the issue of Iraq.

- The front page of Murdoch's Australian announces, "US foiled 10 al-Qa'ida plots". At least the Sydney Morning Herald buries the claim. Nothing the Bush administration says can be taken at face value anymore.

MediaChannel.org explains why: "All of this was played straight in the press, despite all the misinformation, deception, psy-ops and inventions we have heard repeatedly about similar secrets that were soon discredited. It's familiar: the press reports every military claim as fact, with no independent assessment. What is still a secret is: Why they do that?"

Using Honest Reporting is a wonderful way to justify your claims? Any idea who is behind that group?
Didn't think so...

Honest Reporting looks like a pretty dark and dreary ole news site Ant.....so don't keep us in suspense, who is behind it?

Honest Reporting was started by far-right Zionists in the US and rarely acknowledges the true source of its funding. It's the kind of joke site that alleges any criticism of Israel is anti-Semitic etc. Yawn.

Anti-Semitic material most certainly does exist in the Arab world, to be sure, including in the Palestinian territories and media. It should be condemned and I do so now. Again.
My original point is simply that to suggest so-called indoctrination occurs in the Palestinian schooling system is far too easy (and besides, care to see the Israeli curriculum re 1948?), but that this is used to suggest all Palestinians hate Jews etc. It's false and typical of Arab bashing.

'I confronted you over your complete evasion over the issue of Jew-hatred within mainstream Arab society'

I'm a bit worried about Arab-hatred within mainstream Jewish society. I find it everywhere I find Jews unfortunately, just as it is difficult to avoid anti-semitism in any long conversation with Arabs in particular and Muslims in general. It seems almost genetic; I'm often shocked by frankly racist asides from members of both groups.

Do you deny Jewish racism toward Arabs exists? Are you willing to 'confront' it? I know one Jew who is- you are a guest on his blog. So no evasion of the topic please. One good turn deserves another.

Perhaps you should write about it on your blog. Oh wait a minute, that would actually take some effort on your part...
