Waning freedom

Reporters Without Borders has released its fourth annual World Press Freedom Index. The results are generally unsurprising.

North Korea, Iraq, Burma, Libya and Uzbekistan all remain deeply undemocratic.

Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Netherlands and Switzerland remain top of the list.

Australia is 31st, well below Lithuania, Benin, Cyprus, El Salvador and a host of other nations.

America fell 20 places, supposedly because of the Judith Miller saga and "legal moves undermining the privacy of journalistic sources."

Isn't it interesting that only one of the 30 countries above us has a branch of Murdoch's PR company publishing the "news" and that, fortunately, still has vibrant alternatives.

What is remarkable is how many countries that were 'cellar dwellers' little more than a decade ago have risen to the top - Slovakia, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, El Salvadore. They have come a long way while our press is in freefall. And all achieved it without the 'benefit' of being occupied by the US/UK/us!
