Reasserting news values

The mainstream media is under attack like never before and I'm often at the front of the line. News junkies still consume information across a wide spectrum. Many people are simply tuning out, however, and living their lives without the intellectual tools to make informed decisions on matters of war and peace.

What happens when news becomes little more than propaganda?

Michael Massing examines the conundrum in the New York Review of Books.

Posting will be light this weekend. Deadlines approaching. If you live in Australia, enjoy the last days of free speech before the imposition of draconian anti-terror legislation.

Than you have what passes for news in most Arab countries. Austrailia should avoid that as much as possible and the odds are very high that it will avoid such rubbish.

AL

Half of commentaries on many blogs talk of the dangers of increasing media concentration. The other half say people are increasingly turning to blogs as replacement news sources. I suppose one can toss a coin.

I have talked to my comrades in ASIO and also Fred from Mossad. Yes, you are correct. All anti-state blogs to be closed down by Thursday. However fear not.. my intervention may mean your blog will in fact be free to say whatever it likes.

Time will tell.

This only scratches the surface. Ealier this year, there was the revelation abotu how add campiagns by the White House, were being televised as news items by TV stations.

These seditions laws are truly frightening. They will definitely inpair news reporting and stifle dissenting views in one way or another.

I don't think Australians really appreciate what the remifications are. When they do, it wil be too late.

Just keep anti-government blogging no matter what. Just don't advocate violence. If enough people do it, the govt won't be able to shut it down.
I myself prefer satire as a form of defence.
