Israeli blindness

Gideon Levy, Haaretz, January 9:

"A concept is born - the 'Sharon legacy.' Like its predecessor, the 'Rabin legacy,' it too will present a persona entirely different from the real person. Therefore, a moment before Prime Minister Ariel Sharon becomes the 'Sharon legacy,' the hero of peace and the disengagement who, had he only continued in his role a little longer, would have brought peace to Israel - we would do well to sketch his non-mythical persona, without mincing words."

In Australia, meanwhile, our media is content printing Zionist propaganda and apocalyptic nonsense.

Why let reality get in the way of a convenient myth?

Perhaps you could address the substance of the articles you link to?

And this is the first time I have ever seen Amir Taheri, the Iranian Muslim, referred to as a Zionist.

Not likely...but in case he does, Anty, just how DOES firing Qassams in to Israel from Gaza get your Palestinian pals any closer to peace or a state?

Usually it's the Arab propaganda that refers to opinion they disagree with as Zionist Propoganda.

It must make you fell really proud knowing beyond all doubt that Zionists never refers to opinions they disagree with as Arab or anti-Semitic propoganda.

So Antony won't be explaining why he thinks Amir Taheri, the Iranian Muslim and frequent critic of Israel, is a Zionist?

Shock, horror!

Not his function, not his mission, and not his agenda.

That's actually a good question Willbourne. The article didn't allude to any particular bias from what I could see.

Is there something in his history we should know about?

He's to the right of most Arab commentators, and has a pro-US slant in many aspects, a frequent critic of extremists. But he certainly isn't a Zionist in any way, shape or form.

By to the right I mean in terms of his thinking on the USA. Not in cultural or economic thinking, he's otherwise very centred.

I am curious as to his sincerity. By that I mean if one were to take Alan Deshowitz as an example. He writes repsectfully about the plight of Palestinians, but his atttitude toward them is suspect at best (he aproves of torure for example).

From his article I would conclude that, Amir Taheri is either well meaning, but naive, or manipulative.

Paul Sheehan in the SMH,
"The object of the rocket attacks from Gaza and southern Lebanon was to kill any peace process, maintain the status quo, thus continuing a long war of attrition against Israel that invigorates the jihadists around the Muslim world."

Who is this guy?

What "peace process"? The Israeli's have shown by pulling out of Gaza that they will give nothing unless they are forced. If there's any danger of them actually having to sit down and talk peace, they kill someone.

Personally I thought the article was very thought provoking and made some quite valid points. There was no error in his factual information. I always understood propoganda to be deliberate misinformation to promote a cause -or at least it should be used that way.

melanie,

Propaganda - 2nd to last paragraph, small example.

"Now Arafat's great adversary, Ariel Sharon, has gone, but it should be remembered that Sharon was not the first Israeli warrior-politician to survey the West Bank and Gaza and decide, like a shrewd general, that the position was untenable for long-term occupation."

Gaza-sure, it's a hell hole, although they sure tried for a while. What was it, a couple of thousand lunatic settleres trying to contain a couple of million Palis, taking all the best bits...?
But the "shrewd general" also thinks that the West Bank is untenable for long term occupation? So what the f*ck are they doing building more settlements? Is this like a strategic thing we're too stupid to be told about? You know we're building settlements now, walling off and splitting up communities, knocking over and stealing olive trees, bowling over Mrs Habib's house of seven children ...but in the "long-term" it's "untenable"....????? Are we doing this to promote discontent amongst Mr & Mrs Habib? Could this lead them to become sympathetic to Al Quaida? Aha! I know there is a conspiracy here somewhere..

Nothing else for it, Paul Sheehan, into the f*khead bin with you.

Dershowitz approves of torture when it is certain the man knows where the bomb is hidden that will kill people.

How much addamo could be in one little post?

...and how is it established that the suspect knows about the bomb? By torturing him of course.

And if he denies knowing anything about a bomb? Easy. Toture him some more until he changes his story.

Dershowitz is not condoning torture in your senerio.

Changing the senerio to fit your agenda does not change the facts.

Dershowitz is an apologist for Israeli systematic practice of torture. Because he's a "civilised" man, he wants to make this lawful, and he wants everyone to do it. This way he can smugly sleep easy at night, knowing his buddies are moral. pure of arms, legal etc.

No he is not. He condones torture for very specific and limited purposes, none of which you have mentioned.

Perhaps your brains are fried? Regardless, you have lied here. That's very wrong.
