If it's still unclear why America's worldwide image is at rock bottom, read on. Torture is encouraged in the land of the free because, well, accountability is non-existent and terrorism must be defeated.
The result? The global superpower is destined for disaster. Even the New York Times is worried:

An administration with no agenda and no competence would be hard enough to live with on the domestic front. But the rest of the world simply can't afford an American government this bad for that long."
Hatred of American policies has never been higher. Bush can barely travel anywhere without massive protests.
There must be some poetic justice somewhere.
Of course, this doesn't bother our terrorist-defeating Prime Minister, John Howard. His political opportunism is boundless, so never forget the following, courtesy of Margo Kingston:

The good news is bombings may have been averted which we should appreciate. The police/ASIO actions were almost wholly based on existing anti-terror legislation that is years old (with the exception of the "a" delete "the" amendment made last week). But the bad news is that Howard benefits in times of threat.
The greatest pity, allowing this repeditive phenomenon, is that Beazeley can't lead an agenda against the anti terror proposals or other major issues so its left to little plebs like us (and Bob Brown) to do it.
I think the thin squad of doers in the Labor Party take the oath of a "loyal" opposition too far.
