Tipping point

UK Telegraph, November 20:

"Col Tim Collins, the controversial Iraq war commander, trained his soldiers to use white phosphorus, which burns through flesh to the bone, in combat against enemy troops.

"The admission by the former Special Air Service officer, revealed in his autobiography Rules of Engagement, contradicts claims by the Ministry of Defence that the chemical was only ever used to create a smokescreen.

"British troops also used white phosphorus to kill Argentinian troops during the Falklands conflict."

Another day and yet another lie by the occupiers of Iraq exposed. The winds of change are blowing through the Iraq quagmire. Murdoch's mouthpiece, the Australian, still talks about "staying the course" and "angry voices on the Left" but only ideologues fail to see the disaster the West has created in fractured Iraq.

The Toronto Star sees clear comparisons between Vietnam and Iraq. Public support has crashed, some Democrats and Republicans are growing a backbone and questioning their "wartime" President and American soldiers keep on getting killed in large numbers. And let's not forget the Iraqi deaths. Impossible to calculate, but hundreds, if not thousands, per month. And this is "liberation"? The occupation is making the country more dangerous and provides a rallying cry for jihadists around the world.

The "liberal" Sydney Morning Herald still refuses to endorse a call for withdrawal but it's only a matter of time. As usual, and despite some qualifications, the SMH advocates exactly the same policy as the Murdoch mouthpiece. "Staying the course" is the catch-phrase for the intellectually unimaginative and politically naive. Besides, how many Iraqis need to die before the Western media elite accepts reality? But then, the daily carnage is barely reported and exact casualty figures are unknown.

Western imperialism has been dealt a deadly blow in Iraq and it couldn't have come a day too soon. A superpower on its knees, and its lap-dog allies, have finally realised that Western "democracy" is not transportable. Cronyism, torture chambers, death squads, random kidnappings - largely committed by US-backed Shiite militias - is the new Iraq.

Welcome to liberation.

Could you please tell me what treaty WP violates? If we're going to talk about war crimes, then please cite a legal violation.

Saddam Hussein had tons of this stuff...hey, I guess we've got his illegal weapons caches now!

Cronyism, torture, death squads, random disappearances - yep, that sounds like the SMH all right.

well shabbypoo

The 1980 UN Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons prohibits use of incendiaries against civilians and demands that forces using them against military targets take all available steps to avoid civilian casualties.

also

A section from an instruction manual used by the US Army Command and General Staff School (CGSC) at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, makes clear that white phosphorus (WP) can be used to produce a smoke screen. But it adds: "It is against the law of land warfare to employ WP against personnel targets."

He also quoted the Army Field Manual, which states: "The use of weapons which employ fire ... is not violative of international law. They should not, however, be employed in such a way as to cause unnecessary suffering to individuals."

so in case you ignored all that,
you can use em, but not purposely against civilians or personnel targets

ps. youre attitude makes me sick

Yeah and everyone who has looked at the evidence says that in terms of blast radius, etc, there's no way wp would have worked to cause thigns the way they happened...why were clothes intact on decomposing bodies? wp burns white-hot, why were the clothes OK? this is what happpens when journos don't have any military contacts they can check stories against.

the biggest mistake with fallujah was not going in and kicking the mad mullahs out of the mosque and taking the town straight away.

"Western imperialism has been dealt a deadly blow in Iraq and it couldn't have come a day too soon."

Is there an imperialism you approve of - say Han chinese race based or javanese muslim based ?

"A superpower on its knees, and its lap-dog allies, have finally realised that Western "democracy" is not transportable. "

Is this supine position a description of moral weakness? economic weakness ? Do you think the US has insufficient resilience to recover ?

"Cronyism, torture chambers, death squads, random kidnappings - "

All features of many governments around the world - when can we expect you to address the multiple failings of so many governments?

"largely committed by US-backed Shiite militias - is the new Iraq."

Are you sure this isn't mainly the perfidious British who have allowed the shite militias to infiltrate the security forces ?

@Shab:

These weapons are particularly dangerous to exposed personnel because white phosphorus continues to burn unless deprived of oxygen or until it disappears, in some cases burning right down to the bone. Burns usually are limited to areas of exposed skin because only the larger WP particles can burn through personal clothing.

Don't bombard cynics with facts. After all, WP was only used against Arabs and terrorists. They clearly deserved it. They're liberated.

Give it up Shab,

A week ago you were just parroting the Pentagon denials about using WP for anything other than obscuration, and denying the reports and conspiracy theories undermined by your own sources. Well, the Pentagon has changed it;s mind a few times from arguing that WP was used against people to arguin it was used only against enemy combatants.

WP has been used a number of innovative ways. It reacts to moisture. It was probabyl dispersed as an aerosol so it will burn human skin without reacting to clothing.

From a truthfully leftie site "Thirld World Traveler" http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/Democracy/Quotes_TAR.html

"People are not picked up and put into ovens, ovens are dropped out of the sky, white phosporous and napalm in Vietnam and El Salvador and in the countries that are attacked."

Old cookers, new country.
